Megatrends in education

Megatrends in education

Beata L. Webb (2021)

The studies of trends in education are often undertaken by governments and national educational institutions with a global reach such as the Centre for Global Higher Education or British Council in the UK, or International Education Australia. Analysing megadata across all aspects of the world economies increasingly allows us to look into the future; into future education, future job markets and future economies. However, the less known is the work of scientists examining the crossroads of trends even on a larger scale, indicating megatrends in the world economy. These megatrends will affect the way the countries are governed, economies run and the way we live our lives: how we shop, how we study and how we work. This futuristic research, undertaken by the world think-tanks such as CSIRO in Australia, already demonstrates the megatrends which our lives will follow, with some of them already playing out. Research on these scientifically determined megatrends indicates that two of the seven most significant disruptions in the world economy involve internationalisation and digitalisation. These two megatrends are already playing out in the global education. It is not a matter of 'if' but a matter of 'when' and 'how' the educational institutions globally will have to consider these immediately. If institutions do not innovate today in order to address these megatrends, they will become extinct.
