Content-based instruction using Moodle: Teaching with TEDTalks

Abstract

This paper will describe how Moodle was employed to facilitate the use of TED Talks as content for an advanced EFL course in development. After a brief overview of content-based instruction (CBI) and issues of suitability of content, it will provide a rationale both for using the TED Talks website and for using the Moodle software, and especially for their use in combination. The paper will provide practical advice on how to set up such a course, describing how the course was organized inside Moodle, how each Moodle feature was used, as well as how best to deploy Moodle to maximize a student-centered, collaborative learning experience. Forums, databases, glossaries, quizzes and workshops made up the core functionality of the course website and each was used for a variety of purposes. An appendix is also provided that shows a detailed 15-week course schedule.
