Submission Guidelines

Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts considered for publication will be double blind reviewed for their presentation and analysis of new empirical data using appropriate research methods, development of theories relevant to language learning and teaching, development or refinement of language learning pedagogies, and discussion papers relevant to teachers and learners of languages at all levels. 

Consider titles that are not too informal or that narrow the focus too much (only include a specific country in the title if you feel that is has a crucial impact on the study), and ensure the writing is clear throughout. Proofread manuscripts thoroughly before submission, as large amounts of grammatical errors can make it difficult for reviewers to read the manuscript which may have a detrimental effect on their evaluation of your research.

Publication Frequency

Artificial Intelligence in Language Education publishes three issues per year. Accepted manuscripts are assigned to the soonest available issue and published as soon as the production process is completed.

Formatting & Layout

Manuscripts must be submitted as a .docx document file. Any information identifying the authors should be removed from the primary manuscript document. Reference to work from the authors should be marked as "Author1, 20xx" or "Author2, 20xx" in the citations, and references should be included as "Author1. (20xx)." or "Author2. (20xx)." Please do not number subsections. Heading levels should be obvious by using the heading functions in MS Word or equivalent. Please do not try to emulate the formatting of the published articles. All references and citations must be in accordance with the APA 7th edition. Where possible, DOIs should be included as "https://doi.org/xxx.xxx" for all references.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. There are no fees to submit to this journal, but article processing charges (APCs) are required for accepted manuscripts before publication this journal. These fees are available here.

Publication Ethics

Note that all submissions to this journal must be original work that has not been published or currently under review elsewhere. Manuscripts that have been published as pre-prints may be considered as being already published. All submissions are checked for plagiarism on submission by iThenticate. Article Types

AILE welcomes high-quality submissions that explore the intersection of artificial intelligence and language education. We publish a variety of article types as outlined below:

Research Articles

Research articles (6,000–8,000 words) should report original empirical studies that investigate the use of AI in language education. Submissions must be grounded in appropriate, well-justified methodological approaches and clearly describe the strategies of inquiry used. Articles should articulate the significance of the findings and provide meaningful implications for language teaching, learning and assessment in local, regional, or international contexts.

Review / Conceptual / Position Articles

Review / Conceptual / Position Articles (4,000–8,000 words) articles synthesize recent research, explore theoretical perspectives, or propose informed stances on emerging issues in AI and language education. They may include critical overviews of current trends, highlight gaps in the literature, and offer recommendations for future research or pedagogical practice.

Innovations in Practice Articles

Innovations in Practice (2,000–3,000 words) features contributions that showcase innovative practices in AI-enhanced language education. Manuscripts should be practice-oriented and include the following elements:
  • Teaching context: A brief description of the institutional and classroom setting, including course objectives, learner profiles, and any relevant background information.
  • Rationale for innovation: An explanation of the motivation behind the innovation. What issue or challenge did it seek to address? How is it informed by existing theory or research?
  • Description of the innovation: A detailed account of the implemented practice, including its design and impact.
  • Reflection: A critical evaluation of the innovation, discussing what was learned and any unexpected outcomes.
  • Future pedagogical directions: Suggestions for improving the practice or addressing challenges in future iterations.

AI Technology Reviews

AI Technology Reviews (2,000–3,000 words) provide critical reviews of AI applications or tools used in language teaching, learning and assessment. Submissions should include a clear description of the technology, an analysis of its features, and an evidence-informed evaluation of its effectiveness in supporting language education. Practical considerations and recommendations for educators are also encouraged.
