Submission Guidelines

Focus and Scope

Manuscripts considered for publication will be double-blind reviewed for their presentation and analysis of new empirical data using appropriate research methods, development of theories relevant to language learning and teaching, development or refinement of language learning pedagogies, and discussion papers relevant to teachers and learners of languages at all levels.

Each submission should include:
– A clear and specific title
– An email address for each author associated with the manuscript
– An abstract of around 250 words in length
– The preferred academic or professional affiliation and ORCiD reference of each author

Regular articles are expected to be 6000-8000 words in length (excluding references and appendixes) and include original research based on solid methodology and sufficient background research.

Note that all submissions to the Journal must be original work that has not been published or under consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts that have been published as pre-prints may be considered as being already published. All submissions are checked for plagiarism on submission by iThenticate.

Please note that there are no requirements for membership to JALT or the JALT CALL SIG for consideration for publication in The JALT CALL Journal. If your manuscript is accepted for publication, please use this template. We recommend you use this template also as you prepare your manuscript to avoid having to reformat it later if accepted.

Journal History

The JALT CALL Journal (ISSN 1832-4215) is an international refereed journal published since April 2005. The Journal encompasses and builds upon the SIG newsletter, C@lling Japan, and is committed to excellence in research in all areas within the field of Computer Assisted Language Learning, while at the same time offering teaching ideas and suggestions from teachers’ personal experiences.

Formatting & Layout

Manuscripts must be submitted as a .docx document file. Any information identifying the authors should be removed from the primary manuscript document.

In the case of the authors referencing their previous work, the authors’ names should be marked as “Author1, 20XX” or “Author2, 20XX” in the citations. For the reference list, please list your papers as “Author1. (20XX).” or “Author2. (20XX).” In case of joint authorship, all authors’ names should be anonymised as “Author1. & Author2. (20XX).”

All information, such as article titles, journal names, issue numbers, acknowledgements, and grant information, which may reveal the authors’ identities, should be completely removed. Failing to do so should be subject to rejection due to the increasing number of such manuscripts.

Please do not number subsections. Heading levels should be obvious by using the heading functions in MS Word or equivalent. Also, please do not try to emulate the formatting of the published articles. All references and citations must be in accordance with the APA 7th edition. Where possible, DOIs should be included as https://doi.org/xxx.xxx for all references.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. There are no article processing charges (APCs) for this journal. The open access statement is available from here.
