Submission Guidelines

Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts considered for publication will be double blind reviewed for their presentation and analysis of new empirical data using appropriate research methods, development of theories relevant to language learning and teaching, development or refinement of language learning pedagogies, and discussion papers relevant to teachers and learners of languages at all levels.

Consider titles that are not too informal or that narrow the focus too much (only include a specific country in the title if you feel that is has a crucial impact on the study), and ensure the writing is clear throughout. Proofread manuscripts thoroughly before submission, as large amounts of grammatical errors can make it difficult for reviewers to read the manuscript which may have a detrimental effect on their evaluation of your research.

Publication Frequency

The Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics publishes three issues per year. Accepted manuscripts are assigned to the soonest available issue and published as soon as the production process is completed.

Journal History

The Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics was originally published in 1999 at Griffith University, Australia, but publication was then halted for personal reasons by the Editor-in-Chief (more information is available in this editorial). The journal was recommenced in 2018, and it has gained international recognition since its new start, attracting authors from all over the world. It is currently indexed in Scopus, DOAJ, ERIC, EBSCO, and the MLA International Bibliography.

Formatting & Layout

Manuscripts must be submitted as a .docx document file. Any information identifying the authors should be removed from the primary manuscript document. Reference to work from the authors should be marked as "Author1, 20xx" or "Author2, 20xx" in the citations, and references should be included as "Author1. (20xx)." or "Author2. (20xx)." Please do not number subsections. Heading levels should be obvious by using the heading functions in MS Word or equivalent. Please do not try to emulate the formatting of the published articles. All references and citations must be in accordance with the APA 7th edition. Where possible, DOIs should be included as "https://doi.org/xxx.xxx" for all references.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. There are no fees to submit to this journal, but article processing charges (APCs) are required for accepted manuscripts before publication this journal. These fees are available here.

Publication Ethics

Note that all submissions to this journal must be original work that has not been published or currently under review elsewhere. Manuscripts that have been published as pre-prints may be considered as being already published. All submissions are checked for plagiarism on submission by iThenticate. Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
A declaration is included in the manuscript regarding usage of generative AI tools. Details can be found about journal policies at https://www.castledown.com/journals/index/author-guidelines-on-the-use-of-generative-ai
The submission file is in Microsoft Word format. Submissions in PDF format will not be accepted.
Where available, DOIs or URLs for the references have been provided.
All information identifying the author or their institution should be removed from the manuscript. Titles should only include country names if this is central to the arguments outlined in the manuscript.
Reference is made to relevant research in journals such as the Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics. Where possible, at least one to three references should show your understanding of work already published in these journals. All references apart from these should also be from reputable sources, and not from unrefereed journals or websites.

Regular Articles

Manuscripts should include a relevant and up-to-date review of the literature to position the research, drawing on work published in reputable journals in the field. Empirical research should be described based on an appropriate, robust methodology, providing information about the subjects, instruments used, duration of the study, and the data collection and analysis methods. Results should be clear and unambiguous and should show a clear relationship with the methodology. The discussion should relate the results to the research questions and/or objectives, and a separate conclusion that outlines the implications of the study in terms of practice and further research. Manuscripts that do not include empirical research should exhibit sufficient insights into the issue being discussed.

Manuscripts should be between 6,500 and 8,000 words in length, inclusive of all text, references, tables, figures, and appendices. Manuscripts that fall outside this range may not be considered for review.

Regular articles consist of the following types:

- Empirical studies exploring how languages are learned, including factors influencing language acquisition in naturalistic and instructional settings
- Research investigating language teaching practices, curriculum development, and teacher education
- Studies on the integration of technology in language teaching and learning, including AI and CALL-related research
- Analyses of sociocultural, political, and identity-related dimensions of language learning and use
- Theoretical or conceptual papers offering new insights or critiques relevant to applied linguistics
- Cross-linguistic and cross-cultural comparisons that inform applied linguistic theory or practice
- Policy-focused research addressing language education, multilingualism, or language planning
- Systematic reviews or meta-analyses that synthesise key findings across studies in applied linguistics
- Innovative methodologies or research designs in language learning and applied linguistics research
- Position papers that present well-argued perspectives on key issues in applied linguistics, propose new theoretical directions, or critically engage with existing debates in the field. These papers should be grounded in relevant literature and aim to stimulate scholarly discussion or offer implications for practice and policy
